If this past Wednesday was like most New Year’s Days, about 60% of Americans made a New Year’s resolution. In terms of improving oneself in the here and now along with eternity, here is the most important resolution one can make: READ AND STUDY THE BIBLE DAILY!
This being the most important resolution one can make has been demonstrated by lots of studies and it is taught by the Word of God itself. Studies have been conducted on thousands of Christians and all point to the importance of a proper relationship with the Bible. One scholar summed it up this way: an individual’s relationship with the Bible is the single most powerful predictor of his or her overall spiritual health.
The Apostle Paul tells us that faith comes from exposure to God’s Word (Romans 10:14-17). The power of God’s Word is testified by passages such as Hebrews 4:12, Isaiah 55:10-12, and II Timothy 3:16-17.
Lots of people make New Year’s resolutions regarding weight loss or physical workouts, but what is more important than one’s spiritual life? Paul phrased it like this in I Timothy 4:8 for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.
Join with me this year and make Bible reading and studying a priority!
Billy and I will kick off 2020 on Sunday evenings with a new sermon series, ‘What Does the Bible Say About…?’ Which is a series focusing on some of the hot topics hitting our brotherhood. This evening I will look at the scriptural role for women in regard to the worship service. Next Sunday evening I will look at the question of instrumental music in the worship service. I will handle the first two Sundays of the month and Billy will have the last two Sundays of the month. We are blessed to serve here at 70 West. Thank you for being our church family.
