They arrive in my email INBOX almost every week. A desperate cry for help from a person in deep despair, like the one I received two weeks ago (Please note – I have been given permission to share this email message).
“Michael, what do I do? I wasn’t raised this way. I have made a total mess of my life. My aim in life has been fun and excitement but that has led me to problems. Bad decisions upon bad decisions… wrong boyfriends who only saw me as something they can take advantage of and use… drugs and alcohol… gambling… and lots of crime. After disappointing them on numerous occasions, friends have turned their backs on me. Even my mom has stopped taking my calls. I don’t blame her. I have wasted her money, her time, and her life with my foolish mistakes. How can I ever win back her love? How can God ever love someone like me? How can I make something out of my life before it’s too late for me?
My heart breaks when I read emails like the one above. I look around and see so many people in our world living just for themselves and missing out on the real meaning of life. You see… the purpose of life is not pleasure. The purpose of life is JESUS.
We all have been created with a HOLE in our life. People, like the woman above in the email, often try to fill that HOLE with things like drugs, alcohol, worldly excitement, possessions, popularity, but it doesn’t work. Only Jesus can fill that HOLE. Only Jesus can make the difference and put real meaning in our lives.
John 10:10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. ESV
Only Jesus can give the abundant life!
