We have a lot of time alone in our own hearts and minds to pick apart our flaws and time to bolster our talents. The act of singing is very black and white. Either, I think, I can sing well or I think I do not sing well. However, singing is commanded by God for His children to worship Him.
For the student of the Bible, it is well understood that true Godly singing is done by our voices only; without the use of of mechanical instruments (Ephesians 5:19, Colossians 3:16, Romans 15:9, and several other places) We can defend this point well. We teach this idea and attempt to sway the thoughts of the outside world. However, I’d like for you to consider a few things this morning.
Do you, as a Christian, like to sing? Singing lifts the mood of the singer. When you and I join voices to sing about the joy of Heaven, the joy of Salvation or the joy of living blameless before God, an unusual chemical reaction in our brain happens. As we focus on the joys found in God, helps us forget about the hardship of this life, for a while. It helps us focus on the eternal pleasure of a life spent for God. We also have been known to have an odd smile on our faces!
Do you, as a Christian, like to help your brothers or sisters? Singing helps encourage our fellow Christians. We can be having a very difficult week; at times we do! We often are too focused on the temporal rather than the Eternal. Would it help your week to know that the joy of God will be forever and that we are just “passing through this land”? Would it help to know that the Almighty God of Heaven and Earth is in control? Would you like to focus on the fact that you have God’s undivided attention in prayer? These songs encourage and strengthen the Kingdom of God.
“sing to me of Heaven, let me fondly dream of its golden glory of its pearly gleam…”
