What then?

What then?

A young boy and his grandfather were in a conversation one day. The conversation was revolving around future plans. The grandfather asked, “What will be after High School for you?”

The boy replied, “College.”

So the old man said “What then?”

Thinking hard, the boy said, “Marriage?!?”

The Grandfather said, “What then?”

“Kids, I think” replied the boy.

“What then?” said grandfather.

The boy started getting frustrated. He said, angrily, “Work for about 25 years.”

Then the retort of the grandfather was, “What then?”

Enraged the boy stated sharply, “RETIREMENT!”

Once more, the grandfather prodded. He said, “What then?”

The boy lost any cool he had. He turned and shouted, “I guess I just DIE!”

To which the grandfather calmly asked, “What then?” What a powerful question!

Some of you have gone onto college campuses. Others have graduated high school. For some, it is a new school, new teachers or new friends at school. These milestones in our lives are important. It is a good thing that we celebrate these milestones. Let me try to give you a little old man advice. Don’t let your youth slip by too fast. Enjoy your time now correctly. Ecclesiastes 11:9, “Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment.” And Ecclesiastes 12:1, “Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them.”

I know you have heard these verses at every youth day. If you will spend about 10 minutes in the study of the words and intent, you will find out this is written by the richest king to ever live. A man with a life full of miscues and mistakes. His goal is to keep you from making foolish choices like him.

Will you be wise enough to listen to the wise king?
